Does your genetic profile actually pre-determine your healthy destiny?
In our society, it has become common to assume that chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, etc., are hereditary. How often have you heard someone with diabetes resigned to their fate because, “it runs in the family”?
But what if we looked at it differently? Maybe the reason a particular person manifests diabetes isn’t solely because of genetics, but rather because they have a similar diet and live a comparable lifestyle to their ancestors afflicted with the condition.
Let’s break it down a bit further.
Epigenetics
Epigenetics is the study of how diet, lifestyle, and environmental choices can affect the way genes work without changing the DNA itself.
Whether your genes express messages of wellness or of illness, is highly influenced by lifestyle factors including nutrition, environment, physical activity, sleep and mindset. These epigenetic influences can “turn on” or “turn off” certain genes. Therefore, we have much more control over the development of chronic illnesses than just our genetic predisposition.
The truth is approximately 90% of chronic diseases are related to lifestyle choices! That’s right, 90%!
A common adage in Functional Medicine is, “genetics may load the gun, but diet and lifestyle pull the trigger.” This means that you may have been born with certain genetic predispositions, but more often than not, YOU have CONTROL as to which genes get activated or suppressed, through the choices you make.
Activating genes of wellness
How can we avoid activation of a genetic predisposition that promotes illness and instead activate those that promote wellness? Eat real whole foods, move your body, sleep well, stress less, surround yourself in an environment conducive to healing and keep a positive mindset!
Our bodies have the innate power and ability to heal and restore a feeling of well-being. There are trillions of changes and micro adjustments occurring in each cell of our bodies every day, regenerating damaged tissue.
As Hippocrates said, “natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.” Give your body what it needs. Send positive signals to your genes and experience true healing!
YOU hold the power to heal!
